Carry-on vs Checked Luggage: My take

The carry-on versus checked luggage debate is one that can define your travel experience.

When it comes to traveling with only a carry-on, the feeling of zipping through airports, bypassing the long wait at the luggage carousel, is undeniably satisfying. It’s a huge freedom – you, your bag, and the open road (or airport terminal, whatever). Plus, the cost savings! Most international and many domestic (though fewer nowadays) airlines let you bring carry-on bags for free, a saving grace for budget-conscious explorers.

But let’s be real, carry-on isn’t without its hiccups. The size limitations can be a real brain teaser. Deciding between your favorite jeans and that cute leather jacket? Tough call. And then there's the overhead bin tussle – a mini battle royale for some bin space.

Now, let's talk checked luggage. You get the luxury of space! You can pack that extra pair of shoes, or those souvenirs you know you'll inevitably buy. There's also a certain ease in strolling around the airport, unencumbered by a heavy or bulky bag, knowing all your travel essentials are safely stowed away in the plane’s belly.

But this comfort can come at a cost – quite literally. Many airlines charge for checked bags. And then, there’s the waiting game at baggage claim, watching suitcase after suitcase that isn’t yours. Not to mention the fear of your bag taking an unplanned trip to a different destination!

There are of course ways to give yourself some piece of mind here. I have status with British Airways, so unless I purchase a basic economy ticket with no hand baggage, I got not only an included checked bag, but an extra checked bag as well. I also started putting Apple AirTags in all my luggage, so I can keep track of everything and know as soon as something goes wrong.

From my own travel tales, I’ve done and enjoyed both. Like the time I breezed through Heathrow with just a carry-on for a London weekend, or when I gratefully checked a bag carrying a full bottle of whisky on my way home from Scotland.

So, what’s the verdict? It’s a personal choice, depending on the nature of your trip, your packing skills, and perhaps your patience level at baggage claims. I’ve swung both ways on the carry-on vs checked luggage spectrum and found joy in each.

What’s your travel style? Are you a light-packing, quick-footed carry-on fan or a checked-luggage-traveler enjoying the freedom of packing extra? Drop your thoughts and experiences in the comments – I’d love to hear how you navigate this travel choice!

Stay sane, drink some water, and pack appropriately!
